Philippine Women’s Volleyball

A historic moment occurred in NCAA Season 97’s women’s volleyball finals. Arellano Lady Chiefs, reigning  champions of Season 92-94, have been dethroned, as the crown went back to Benilde’s Lady Blazers, title-holders of Season 91. A successful sweep of 26-24, 25-12, 25-9 during the finals held in late July of this year produced a new champion.

The game started off strong with a 20-21 score, in favour of Arellano. The set was tied with a 24; however, a mistake from the Lady Chiefs gave Benilde the win for the first set. The Lady Blazer’s two blocks, two aces and strong defence made it difficult for their opponent to attack, thus enabling them to bring home the second set, as well. Following these two consecutive losses, Arellano further struggled with their offense, paving way for Benilde to cap the third set and, consequently, securing the championship of the tournament.

This feat was made possible by the star players of the College of Saint Benilde. Mycah Go, team captain of the Lady Blazers, was awarded the highest honour of being the season’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) for leading their university to victory, as well as the First Best Opposite Striker of her team. She contributed a total of eight points, 15 digs and five excellent receptions to their success.

Gayle Pascual, another star player of the team, became the MVP of the NCAA Finals game due to her impeccable performance consisting of three effective blocks, 10 strong attacks and a couple of service aces – all of which earned her team a whooping14 points.

Jade Gentapa is the third notable player who bagged a total of 11 points, with 10 outstanding digs and five exceptional receptions. Cristy Ondangan is the fourth commendable player of the team for achieving 10 points in offence, as well as three successful blocks in favour of her team. Then, there’s also Cloanne Mondonedo who obtained three points and did 13 flawless sets.

These are only five of the many Blazing Queens of CSB who took part in the university’s journey of taking back the most desired crown as NCAA Women’s Volleyball Champions.
