Valve celebrates Half-Life’s 25th anniversary with a huge update

The Half-Life series has been hugely successful for Valve and, despite the first game coming out 25 years ago, the love that fans of the franchise have for the game has stayed strong.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Half-Life, Valve has released a huge update to the game, alongside an hour long documentary looking back at the first-person shooter’s development.

A huge Half–Life update has been released to mark the game’s 25th anniversary

Half-Life was Valve’s first game when it was released in 1998, and it has remained incredibly popular over the last two and a half decades.

To mark the game’s anniversary, Valve has put out an update which has both added new elements to Half-Life and brought back old ones.

On Twitter, Valve said: “The Half-Life 25th Anniversary Update brings back a bunch of long-lost content, including the “Half-Life: Uplink” standalone demo, launch day main menu, and old deathmatch maps created by the original team, plus brand new deathmatch maps made by current Valve level designers.”

As well as bringing back Half-Life Uplink, a CD-exclusive mini-campaign, the update has added four new multiplayer maps, updated graphics settings, and added support for controllers and Steam Deck.

A website dedicated to the anniversary update includes a full list of new and restored content which has been added to the game.

Valve has released a documentary looking back at Half-Life’s development

Alongside the update, Valve has released an hour-long documentary, in collaboration with Secret Tape, speaking with the original development team that worked on the game 25 years ago.

Valve said: “Getting together after all this time was the perfect opportunity to revisit the game as it existed in its earliest forms, and to talk about how and why it eventually took shape the way it did.”

The documentary explores Valve’s beginnings, character and weapon design, creating the first levels in the game, and more.

Additionally, Half-Life is currently free to add to your Steam library, with other games in the series heavily discounted.
