Actors will have to worry about breaking a lot more than a leg who are cast to perform as tributes in the first-ever stage adaptation of The Hunger Games in London. The play, which will be based on Suzanne Collins’ first book in the mega-popular series — The Hunger Games — will premiere in the fall of 2024.
The franchise, which also spawned four blockbuster films that made Jennifer Lawrence a household name, is currently gearing up for the release of the Hunger Games prequel film The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, set to come out in theaters on November 17.
The director of the live theatrical version will be Matthew Dunster (“Hangmen”) and the playwright set to adapt the story for stage is Conor McPherson (“Girl From the North Country”).
The eponymous games of the title refer to a dystopian televised battle royale in which young people called tributes are selected by a lottery and forced to fight to the death. Collins’ book begins with protective older sister Katniss Everdeen volunteering to take her younger sister’s place in the 74th annual Hunger Games.
According to a press release about the stage adaptation, the live Hunger Games show will be a “gripping tale of courage, defiance, and the unbreakable human spirit.”
“I’m very excited to be collaborating with the amazing team of Conor McPherson and Matthew Dunster as they bring their dynamic and innovative interpretation of ‘The Hunger Games’ to the London stage,” said Collins in the statement.
McPherson added, regarding Collins’ source material, “She has created a classic story which continues to resonate now more than ever.”
“In a world where the truth itself seems increasingly up for grabs,” he continued, “‘The Hunger Games’ beautifully expresses values of resilience, self-reliance and independent moral inquiry for younger people especially. This is turbo charged storytelling of the highest order and I’m hugely excited to bring it to a new generation of theatre goers and to Suzanne Collins’ longstanding and devoted fans.”
The odds of The Hunger Games play being a big hit seem ever in the franchise’s favor.
