Now, some might wonder what does slang mean. Slang are words, phrases or terms that differs from their literal definition. It is based on trends and different culture which are used only for a short period of time. These days, most of the youngsters which includes Generation Alpha (kids who are born in year 2013-2025), Generation Z (people who are born in year 1996-2012) and Millennials (people who are born in year 1981-1995) has their own slang terms which can’t be seen in educational materials like books and dictionaries but mostly used in the internet. Here are some of the few slang terms and their definitions that you might encounter and find useful as a Generation X (people who are born in year 1965-1980) and a Baby Boomer (people who are born in year 1946-1964).
Foreign Slang Terms
1. Boujee – is a word used to describe someone as rich, luxurious and fancy.
Example: “I love her new dress! She looks boujee in it.
2. Drip – is a word used to describe someone’s clothing as stylish and fashionable.
Example: “Hey, look at my drip today! You think she’ll like it?”
3. Vibe check – is used to make sure someone is alright or having a good time.
Example: Macie: “What’s up, Francis? Vibe check!”
Francis: “I’m all good. Thanks!”
4. Woke – is a word used to describe someone as socially conscious and aware.
Example: “After listening to the President’s State of the Nation speech, my dad became woke and it changed his political perspective.”
5. Rizz – is a slang term that originally came from the word ‘charisma,’ rizz is used for a person’s flirting skill.
Example: “He got me with his rizz.”
6. The ick – is a word used to describe a person’s feeling of sudden disgust to another for different personal reasons.
Example: “Yesterday, I saw his instagram account following a bunch of nasty pages that posts pictures of nude girls. I felt the ick, that is why I don’t talk to him anymore.”
7. Slay – is a word used to describe someone on fire or something that is amazing, cool or great.
Example: “Oh, wow! Look at her suit, slay!”
8. Iykyk – is an acronym which simply means “If you know, you know.”
Example: “Ever heard of the famous jelly shoes back then? Iykyk.”
9. Era– is a substitute word for ‘phase’ it is what you are into lately.
Example: “These past few days, I’ve been obsessed with shopping and collecting perfumes. I think I’m on my fragrance era!”
10. Stan – came from the words ‘stalker’ and ‘fan’ which just means that someone is a major fan of someone. It does not meant to be on the negative and creepy side.
Example: “I’ve been a stan of BTS since I’ve discovered the meaning of their songs.”
Filipino Slang Terms
1. Forda ____ ang ferson – just means ‘for the person’ which is just a creative way of sharing what you are doing.
Example: “Forda laba ang ferson.” (I’m/ I will be doing my laundry)
2. Shookt – is a word used to describe a feeling of shock, stun or anything that is unexpected.
Example: “Grabe yung mga sinabi niya kanina, I’m shookt!” (Her words earlier left my mouth opened, I’m shookt!)
3. Jowa – is a word that means a relationship partner.
Example: “Ano ginagawa ng jowa ko?” (What is my boyfriend/girlfriend doing?)
4. Sana all/Na ol – is a term used to express a feeling of wanting someone or something that other people has.
Example: “Sana all may Ferrari 488 GTB.” (I hope I could have the Ferrari 488 GTB)
5. Marites – is a term that is originally came from ‘Mare, anong latest?’ Marites is commonly referred to a girl who loves gossiping about other people’s
Example: “Ang dami na namang marites dito sa room.” (There’s a lot of gossip girls again in this room)
6. Char/Charing/Chariz – is a term that simply means ‘joke!’ or ‘just kidding!’ commonly used when a person is being playful, joking or kidding.
Example: “Extra rice nga, chariz!” (Can I have some extra rice? Just kidding!)
7. Awit – does not literally mean a song but is a word used to express a feeling of a not so serious type of hurt, disappointment or dissatisfaction. Originally came from the phrase “Aw, ang sakit!” (Ouch! It hurts!). Keep in mind to not use this term in a serious matter as this may come as an insult to other people.
Example: “Umuulan na naman, awit! Wala pa naman akong payong.” (It’s raining again, ouch! I do not have an umbrella with me)
8. Budol – is a term used when someone is making you buy things impulsively due to their smooth talk or marketing skills.
Example: “Na-budol ako ni CK na bumili nung salamin niya na nakita ko sa IG story niya.” (CK made me buy her eyeglass instantly when I saw her IG story)
9. Boogsh! – is a term used to describe someone or something as extravagant.
Example: “Boogsh! Ganda ng make up niya oh!” (Boogsh! Her make up is good!)
10. Dog Show – is a term used when someone is teasing you or making a fool out of you.
Example: “Dinog show na naman ako ng pamilya ko sa comments section.” (My parents is teasing me again in the comments section)
