Moira dela Torre’s ‘Maria Clara’ song: the perfect reminder that ‘everything will be alright’

There have been a bunch of songs written to inspire people to keep going, reach for that dream, and never give up. But not all struck a cord in the heart. That’s one thing powerhouse OPM hitmaker Moira dela Torre made sure of: that her songs resonate with every struggling soul to make it through life. Known for her heartfelt tagos kung tagos hits, Moira put together a soothingly soulful rhythm that speaks of self-love, Maria Clara, a track she wrote for her new endorsement, Maria Clara Virgin Sangria. With the lines Maria Clara, baby, don’t you cry / Take it slow, love, you have all the time / I know the world can be hard sometimes / You know that I’m here…  Coz in the end, everything will be alright…  During the launch of her latest endorsement, Moira shared that she wanted a fitting song that would give anyone the assurance that everything would always turn out fine.  “I wanted to accompany that with music that would ease your mind even just a little bit and remind you that, kaya mo ‘yan, you are not alone in this and everything will be alright,” she added. True enough, since the launch of the song’s performance video, people’s responses proved that her message of support and encouragement echoed with her listeners, especially those who needed a good dose of encouragement.      Moment of uncertainty turning out alright Moira also shared a particular instance during a Canada trip where she herself experienced a thrust of uncertainty but was bewildered after letting go and trusting the beauty of the unknown. She talked briefly about making her way into an unplanned city that eventually turned out to be the best part of her trip.  “It didn’t really matter that I did not know what to see in Winnipeg. It didn’t really matter that I did not know what to expect in Winnipeg because it exceeded my expectation anyway,” she said.  “Of all the cities, that was the best one, and that was the one I didn’t plan for,” she said.    Moira’s music Moira is a multi-platinum recording artist and one of the most successful singers of her generation. Throughout her career, she has scored hit after hit after hit that became the ultimate anthems of today’s hugot-hungry individuals. Among her hits were Tagpuan, Kumpas, Darating Sa’yo, Patawad, Torete, Malaya, Ikaw Pa Rin, Saglit and so many others. Apart from her music, Moira has also been the latest addition to the roster of celebrity “fitspirations” after she successfully lost a significant amount of weight. Now more than ever, fans are enamored with Moira especially after finding her way into a healthier life.

LIST: Things only ‘90s kids would understand

Admit it, the ‘90s were the best. It was the time of grunge fashion, family computers, baggy pants, boy bands, and girl groups. The decade was a sweet spot in history that bloomed various trends into global fads, rolling out the essentials of every 90s kid’s memory arsenal. What’s so good about the ‘90s is that it was the last breath of the analog era when people still had freedom to move and mess without any record of it in a digital universe. Unlike today, people then did things simply for the joy of it instead of likes and shares. Remember being clueless where your folks were after leaving the house? Yeah. How we wish to have it back. That is why, more than any decade, it was the ‘90s that people often reminisced about. With that, let’s look back at some of the most iconic things that we loved about the ‘90s.  Grunge fashion  Remember when shredded and faded denims, flannel button-downs, and worn-out oversized graphic tees were your thing? Yes, you did. You even completed your look with combat shoes, choker necklaces, and weird glasses, right? The grunge fashion that defined the ‘90s was a breakaway from the polished look of decades prior. It might not exactly be stylish for today’s young generation, but it was for the Gen Zs of yesteryear. Grunge music  Fittingly, the fashion of the ‘90s matched the music of the decade. Just like fashion, the era saw the rise of grunge music from underground clubs to the mainstream. Having started in the late ‘80s, grunge became a phenomenon in the ‘90s. The genre, more than anything, gave kids a voice that helped them feel less alone. At the onset of the decade, kids, through music and fashion, found an avenue to express their anger and frustration. This is why groups like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, Alice in Chains, Melvins, Mother Love Bone, and many others gained global music supremacy. Locally, bands like Eraserheads, Rivermaya, Introvoys, Parokya ni Edgar, Wolfgang, and True Faith revived the local music scene that became known in history as the Golden Age of OPM. MTV The music, fashion, and culture of the ‘90s come together on MTV. In the years that followed its launch in 1981, the channel was able to propel new bands into the global spotlight, thereby giving birth to a new culture that defined a generation. Music videos, as the name suggests, became a phenomenon. Aside from the music, the video that told the story of a song also made a lasting impact on kids then and even now. It was also the platform that introduced what ‘90s kids thought was the coolest job on earth—being an MTV VJ. Imagine personally knowing international artists, reading fan mail from all over the world, and delivering the hottest buzz in the music industry as your job. And yes, there have been a number of Filipino celebrities who were once MTV VJs. Living the MTV VJ dream were Donita Rose, KC Montero, Belinda Panelo, G Toengi, and Regine Tolentino. Boy bands  We just cannot miss them. Replacing the techno pop era of the ‘80s was the refreshing pop sound of the ‘90s brought by boy bands that dominated the decade. Before the dawn of K-pop, boy bands like the Backstreet Boys, NSync, 98 Degrees, Westlife, Boyzone, A1, Five, Hanson, Boyz II Men, The Moffats, LFO, and so many others exploded on the MTV charts.  Now, many of these boy bands are resurfacing and performing sold-out world tours to the delight of their still-loyal fans. CDs and cassettes Yes, Gen Zs, there was such a thing. Before the era of Spotify, YouTube, and music streaming, there was a much more organic way of listening to music—through CDs and cassettes.  Back then, a music lover would have to go to the stores to buy CDs and cassettes, which are played on a walkman or a discman. Usually, cassettes have a running time of 90 minutes per side. So back then, if you had one tucked in your pockets or in your bag, you were a cool kid.

LIST: Patama songs for the stubborn heart when ‘di ko kaya mag-move on’ is peg

UMAASA pa rin, besh?  Remember those nights when you were half-awake in bed, faced to the wall, sobbing until you fell asleep? We’ve all been through it. Nagmahal, nasaktan, naiwan. Relate?  But even if we move forward and start a new life, something has not changed in time – your feelings. Hinahanap mo pa rin, mahal mo pa rin. Gusto mo pa rin maulit ‘yung kayo because even if your mind tells you tama na, your heart says kapit pa.  As they say, the heart wants what it wants.  Kaya naman here are some good old classics to listen to kung gusto mo mag-move on pero mas gusto mong bumalik siya.  1. The ultimate hugot song of the ‘90s, and still is today.  Whether you’ve been repeatedly cheated, disregarded or disrespected, eh mahal mo eh, ganun talaga.  Sometimes, we can’t just figure out why we love someone the way we do, we just do, kahit gaano pa tayo sinaktan.  2. Someday (Nina)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkEJH_st870  That bitter, excruciating, knee-crippling split, whether official, gradual or sudden, hurt you like hell. It was that split that had you die a thousand deaths and had you wishing, “One day, I’ll forget about you / You’ll see, I won’t even miss you / Someday, someday…”  At one point, you swore, someone will love you as much as you love him, someone will need you as much as you need him. You looked forward to that day when you will wake up not missing him anymore.  Pero sa puso mo, you know, it’s still him.  3. Burnout (Sugarfree)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Um-B-dd94jg  Lovers to strangers, what can be more painful? Surely, when everything ended, you wondered, “ Teka muna, teka lang, kailan tayo nailang…” But no matter what happened, you don’t plan on looking anywhere else because siya noon, siya ngayon at siya pa rin bukas.  Just like what singer Ebe Dancel said, “Oh, kay tagal din kitang mamahalin…”  4. … Nuff said.  5. Kung ‘di rin lang ikaw (December Avenue)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1pwbnzbe7g  If there’s one perfect song you can dedicate to that person you call “the one,” this could be it. You are closing your doors because you are sure, “Kung ‘di rin tayo sa huli / Aawatin ang sarili na umibig pang muli…”  6. Huwag Ka Na Magbabalik (Roselle Nava)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsiU49_UvTg&t=6s  There’s no better song that speaks your pain after being left than Roselle Nava’s “Huwag Ka Na Magbabalik”  While you’re wishing he does not make his comeback, you very well hope he returns, because… ‘Di ko kayang pigilin ang sigaw nitong damdamin / Labis man akong sinaktan / Ikaw pa rin ang aking mahal…”  7. Migraine (Moonstar 88)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etL85QrVKXg  For those who may be forgetting to check the label, “oo nga pala, hindi nga pala tayo…”  Moonstar’s 88’s Migraine reminds us all that if you are enjoying paying girlfriend services for the price of a “friend,” isip, isip girl!  Talking stage is fun, thrilling and perhaps the most exciting part of getting to know a person. But let’s not forget, we have to promote ourselves one way or another.  Or else, you’ll forever stay, “Nahihilo nalilito (nahihilo) / Asan ba ko sayo asan ba ko sayo…”
