Alas, one of the most anticipated American holidays has turned a corner. But the spookiness isn’t over yet. Let’s take a look at the most popular Halloween costumes.
According to the 2022 edition of Google’s Frightgeist, the top-trending Halloween costumes in the United States range from classic witches to all-time favorite superheroes.
1. Witch
Since 2014, Google Trends shows that Witch is among the top searched Halloween costumes. Who can contest when you have a variety to choose from? There’s Glinda from children’s classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and Broadway-hit musical “Wicked.” There’s Scarlet Witch by Marvel. And let’s face it, most of the time, it’s an easy way out of a last-minute party.
2. Spider-Man
Your friendly neighborhood Spiderman by Marvel is a no-brainer. Surely you’ve seen him (or her) in one of your Halloween parties each year. Frightgeist attributes that Comic Book Characters make up 9% of all costume searches.

3. Dinosaur
Dinosaurs have been trending since land before time- oops, we mean since 2004. With inflatable-rexes everywhere, it isn’t a surprise that dinosaurs are a top searched costume. Animals make up 11% of all costume searches, according to Frightgeist.
4. “Stranger Things”
Of course, an all-time favorite. If you think about it, Stranger Things TV show is not only a thrilling science fiction horror drama series, but it is also set in the 80s. It’s a nostalgia-fest for baby boomers and a dystopia for millennials and Gen Zs. Frightgeist notes that TV Characters make up 5% of all costume searches.
5. Fairy- Fairy Tale (Manga Series)
Disney’s Tinkerbell, Fairy godmothers are just among the topics people popularly Google search for this costume. Meanwhile Frightgeist reports that Fantasy Characters make up 5% of all costume searches
6. Pirate
A mix of maybe everything in your wardrobe- corset, boots and a touch of renaissance. Frightgeist logs “Professions” is actually 10% of all costume searches. Who wants to be a lawyer and a doctor? Halloween is all about adventure, apparently.
7. Rabbit
Guess when Halloween is up, you wish Easter is around the corner? White rabbit is the most searched topic. And of course the classic Alice in Wonderland’s Peter Rabbit isn’t remiss of any Halloween celebration.
8. Cheerleader
The high school cliché of being THE hottest and most popular person in high school is of course a cheerleader. It’s a throwback too for actual cheerleaders. No need to get a new costume!
9. Cowboy
Western cowboy or cowgirl costumes are timeless. Just a little faux leather and a cowboy hat to let those big skies and blue mountain ranges become some real old western bad asses. Of course, there’s Woody too!
10. Harley Quinn
with Suicide Squad and all, Harley Quinn has gained more traction than ever before. Maybe people wanted to try something different from the classics Wonder Woman or Cat Woman? #
