Gaining Weight, Gaining Wins

One of life’s injustices: Some people seldom gain weight even when they eat a lot, while others need to check their diet and control their eating habits.

Is it just the metabolism or is there some kind of magic or secret why some people manage to never gain weight?

Whatever it is, this article will not explore the way people consume their food nor give judgement on how each of us prefer to  take care of our bodies. No unsolicited advice here! Just a conversation about the importance of appreciating yourself and your body, at the same time, understanding why some of us should be more delicate with words subjecting someone to criticism or humiliation.

Is the word “fat” a big deal? Is there a right time to use the word “fat”? Maybe to some, fat is not a bad word but rather a plain description of a body size. Some will also reclaim that fat shouldn’t be a problem, it’s the people and the way they think.

Multiple thoughts maybe, for Swifties and critics, after Taylor Swift got a swift ‘fatphobic’ backlash over one of the scenes in her newest single ‘Anti-Hero’. In the original music video (if you saw it first), Swift steps on a weighing scale and sees the word “fat” as a result instead of numbers, with disappointments from the face of her alter ego beside her.

Critics online said the scene was “fatphobic” since it exhibits fear and disappointment of being fat. Others defended that Swift never mentioned being fat is a problem, she was just depicting her own story, expressing how dysmorphia made her feel over her body before.

Some people’s coping mechanisms depend on how one intends to portray his or her own experiences, be it in songs, movies, or poems. Regardless of how people took this issue online, Swift has later edited the Anti-hero video without the “fat” word-thing in the weighing scale and continues to hit the chart.

Same attitude, I guess, on how to take body shaming or fatphobia, be it intentional or not.

You can’t force people to stop criticizing you; you just have to shut them off by ignoring them, change their mindset and move forward with grace. Sadly, while some of us have the guts to ignore criticisms, there are some who couldn’t take it because of humiliations—that’s how powerful words and actions are.

Easier said than done but it doesn’t define you and the good that you do in this world. Do not ever lose the will and passion to see the beauty in you. You are lovable so stop hating things about your body. Let’s normalize accepting each other’s beautiful flaws and sizes, and keep on nourishing our body and soul with good care and positive mindset.

We can gain more wins when we start accepting gaining weight!
